The arc is bending
In 1869, Caroline Earl White along with 30 other ladies founded the first animal shelter in the United States called the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In 1986, Gene Baur and his then wife, Lorri rescued a sheep named Hilda from a pile of dead animals behind a stockyard and founded Farm Sanctuary. Today, Farm Sanctuary has become one of the largest and most recognized farm animal sanctuaries in the country. According to the Humane Society, there are currently over 10,000 rescue groups and animal sanctuaries in North America. In my immediate family alone, I am vegan, my wife and daughters are vegetarians, my adult sons and their wives are vegetarians or vegans and my youngest two grandchildren have been vegetarian since birth! Martin Luther King Jr. once famously said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice” and that my friends, is my point of this blog. I truly think that justice is for humans and animals to live in harmony as I believe the way nature was intended. Times are changing as people are coming to the realization that the living beings all around us deserve to be respected. There are more non-meat eaters today than in modern history. Fast food chains and cosmetic lines now offer plant-based options. There are free programs to get our pets spayed and neutered to prevent unwanted pregnancies and responsible ownership. All around us, slowly, we are bending towards justice. Justice for the other living beings with which we have been blessed to share this planet. And maybe someday we will come full circle to man and animal once again living in harmony. Just like we did millions of years ago.
